Plant on lower shore sand scoured limestone bedrock. The distichous nature of the branching can be seen but the alternately pinnate branching pattern is masked by irregular growth probably caused by damage to the plant, perhaps by grazing. Towards the apex of the plant, the lanceolate air bladders can be seen. Scale: Plant length approximately 50 cm. Location:West Angle Bay, Pembrokeshire - Photographer:F. Bunker - Date:15/05/1982 - Identified By:F. Bunker - Verified By: |

| Identification Notes | ||
| A large brown species growing 30 to 120 cm long with compressed fronds less than 1cm broad that branch in an alternately pinnate manner with several orders of branching in one plane. Stalked and jointed air bladders are present which are jointed oblong or lance shaped with an elongated point at the apex. Plants are attached via a strong discoid holdfast. Plants are tough and leathery and olive green in colour when young becoming brown when older. Other characterising features: Receptacles are bunches of stalked grape-like structures at the end of branches which bear conceptacles containing both antheridia and oogonia. Newton, 1931 |
