Identification Notes
Young plants attach by a disc, which develops into a large warty structure.  The stipe is compressed with spiral twist above the warty bulb and it develops a wavy-curled margin several cm wide.  A large frond develops on the end of the stipe, which divides at the margins, especially in exposed situations.  Colour brown.

Unilocular sporangia occur on the expanded portion of the frond and the wavy margin of the stipe.  This plant shows an 'alternation of generations' with microscopic male and female gametophytes.

Newton, 1931
